John farms 320ha across light soils growing a range of combinable crops in an area which is severely protected from a water quality, nitrates and phosphates perspective. John has been working on soil management for the last 35 years and has been innovating both in terms of integrated pest management, cultivation, the use of cover crops, spring cropping and a reduction in fertiliser and plant protection to enhance soil biology.

A promise to do more to protect the soil will form part of a vision for the UK farm industry being unveiled by the government later.

Countryside Productivity Small Grants Scheme open for applications

The next funding round for the popular Countryside Productivity Small Grants scheme has opened for applications today (Tuesday 9 July).

Through the initiative, farm businesses can apply for grants of between £3,000 and £12,000 to help them invest in new and innovative technology. Today’s announcement follows the first round of funding in 2018 when £15 million was awarded to successful applicants.
