Carbon Footprint your farm with The Farm Carbon Calculator

We get it – carbon footprinting your farm can be hard, and sometimes we all face problems fitting all the farm information we have into an online carbon calculator. We are here to help – because the results are so worth it.

Drop into one of our in-person clinics at major upcoming events to have your questions answered, or join one online from your own home. Write queries down if they are hard, and we give you some great advice. We’re also happy to help look at your reports, or any other questions you have.

The Dung Beetle Conference 2024

Biodiverse farming; making agro-ecology work for farmers, public and animal health and the environment

Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th June 2024

Yeo Valley Holt Farm, Bath Road, Blagdon, Bristol BS40 7SQ

Please join us for our inaugural Dung Beetle Conference kindly hosted by Yeo Valley Organics and co-sponsored by First Milk and Yeo Valley.

About the conference

This practically applied gathering builds on the expertise of the Dung Ecology conferences which ran from 2009. Our Dung Beetle conference seeks to harness that body of work and apply it to stimulate action on integrating nature and farming and explore how we can enhance biodiversity to achieve regenerative farming outcomes.

Grazing ruminants are vital to our farmed environment. We need to better integrate livestock into all types of farming and ensure management interventions are well thought out, to achieve animal, soil, and end-consumer health and productivity.

We focus on the dung beetle as a centre point. These soil engineers, climate enhancers, and pathogen reducers are a keystone species and a powerful proxy for soil health and the wider vibrancy of soil life. At this conference, you will hear from regenerative farmers, soil scientists, environmental experts, agroecologists and veterinary scientists.

In the spotlight will be ‘integrated parasite management’ as a newly  proven and effective approach to reducing reliance on parasiticides. This easy to adopt approach, not only helps our dung beetles, but opens the door to many multi-beneficial interventions and outcomes.

The expert speakers have been selected to enhance learning and encourage the mutual exchange of knowledge and experience.

For those interested in influencing policy, there will be an opportunity to be part of a consultation with the VMD, the body responsible for animal medicines in the UK.

We would expect this conference to appeal to absolutely everyone! But we recognise special interest from farmers, vets, entomologists, ecologists, advisors and those involved in veterinary medicine and relevant policy.

All are welcome, but space is limited!

Programme

Please see an overview below and the full programme here

Day 1: Tuesday 11th June
Evening meal optional

Day 1 will appeal to farmers, vets, ecologists, and a wider interest audience.

  • Session focused around the dung beetle and the services it provides to agriculture (parasite control, nutrient cycling, soil health, reducing methane emissions from manure).
  • Session by farmers and vets discussing their farms & case studies where they have reduced wormer use by a range of means.
  • Last session will be led by non-veterinary advisors for agricultural management, such as grazing to favour agroecological approaches.
  • Dung beetle safari in the afternoon
  • Evening meal is an optional extra, payable separately
Day 2: Wednesday 12th June

We think Day 2 will appeal to those keen on finding and learning about ‘dungers’ and passionate about driving change across the industry.

  • Larger scale dung beetle safari in beautiful and rare agroforestry setting
  • Session demonstrating a wide array of positive impact projects and applied integrated parasite management practices across farms
  • Vet-led case studies demonstrating good practice
  • Industry change workshop: This session aims to bring people and ideas together from those passionate and experienced in this area with some of those working in policy to help find or start to drive solutions for the future

Farm Carbon Toolkit’s Annual Field Day 2024

This year our Annual Field Day will take place on Thursday 26 September 2024 in Herefordshire.

A day for farmers, by farmers, sharing experiences for improving performance and resilience in a challenging environment. The focus of this year’s event will be the value of mixed farming.

We are grateful to Billy Lewis for kindly hosting this event at Boycefield Farm, Herefordshire.

During the day we will showcase the ways in which farmers are already changing their farming practices to respond to the need to reduce GHG emissions and build on-farm carbon, within resilient businesses. Sessions will cover the following topics:

  • Soil management: the importance of soil management as the starting point for resilient farming systems, including a soil pit.
  • Livestock: the value of livestock as a mechanism to drive soil health, biodiversity and habitat management (or something similar)
  • Arable: adapting arable systems to build fertility and resilience in a changing climate
  • The economic and climate impact of regenerative farming systems

Throughout the day we will hear from farmers and share our insights about how farmers are reducing GHG emissions and building soil health and business resilience.

A confirmed programme will be available shortly.

Carbon Farmer of the Year Awards

The winners of the Carbon Farmer of the Year competition will also be announced. To find out more about the competition and information on how you can apply or nominate someone, visit this page.

Confirmed speakers include:

More confirmed speakers to follow!

  • Billy Lewis – Our host and 2022 Soil Farmer of the Year whose approach of integrating livestock and herbal leys into a previously intensive arable system has rejuvenated soil health and drastically reduced fertiliser and feed inputs and boosted profitability.
  • Ed Horton – Large-scale mixed farmer and Soil Farmer of the Year 2024 finalist whose ‘hybrid’ farming system has livestock integration at its heart, benefitting soil health, water quality, biodiversity and the bottom line.
  • Angus Gowthorpe – mixed farmer and Soil Farmer of the Year 2018 finalist Angus has been at the forefront of the regenerative transition in the UK and continues to push the envelope for what defines a sustainable farming system.
  • Thomas Gent – Carbon Farmer of the Year 2023 finalist and regenerative arable farmer who continues the legacy of his father and grandfather who through straw for muck (via AD) deals has proven an innovative way of integrating livestock into his system in an area where traditional livestock integration has proven challenging.
  • Tom Burge – Upland beef and sheep farmer whose move to a regenerative, grazing-based system has helped to eliminate inputs and transform the finances on his challenging Exmoor farm
  • Niels Corfield – Regenerative agriculture advisor, educator and researcher whose mission is to create regenerative farms and landscapes in the UK and Europe.
